What is Asset Tracking?

Asset tracking is managing availability and serviceability of assets. Every company uses assets on a daily basis. An "asset" is any item that is used internally, such as equipment, reusable containers and tools. A properly integrated asset management system can help a company accurately and efficiently track any of its assets. Rather than wasting time searching for and replacing lost assets, you can keep track of all your valuable assets with a convenient, easy to use complete asset tracking system.

An asset is tracked as an individual item, having its own unique barcode label or RFID tag. The key is to have accurate information on each specific item, such as location, condition, purchase date, size and value. The item is scanned on its barcode or RFID or both and is relayed to the managing software system through a wireless or fixed network.

Asset tracking software is the source of all your asset information and dictates how you interact with this information. Normally, you will be viewing the client on a desktop computer while the mobile devices will have a basic version of the software for functions needed in the field. Depending on your need for real-time or batch updates, certain software will support one or the other. The desktop client will contain the full detailed database of assets, allow printing of labels and run a variety of reports. Reporting is a very important aspect of the software as this will give you greater visibility into your collection of assets. Knowing when things need to be replaced or serviced and general asset analysis is done with reporting.

Rental companies and hardware servicing companies are increasingly turning to asset tracking for all larger pieces of equipment in order to manage theft, misuse, history and preventative maintenance.

Examples for assets include; Reusable containers - beer kegs, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) used in the food and chemical industries. Racks for glass and automotive parts, unit load devices (ULDs) used in the airline industry, rolling cages, collapsible aluminium containers for raw materials, portable surgical instruments, medical devices in hospitals, recording equipment used by broadcasting companies and work in progress components.

Do you need Asset Tracking?

Before considering an asset tracking system there are a few key questions to answer:
• How many assets do you need to track?
• What type of assets are you tracking and what is the value?
• Where are the assets located? How many locations do you have?
• Are the assets already labelled? Will you use barcode or RFID tags or both?
• Do you need real-time updates or can batch collection be used?
• Do you need GPS tracking, or just tracking at fixed locations?
• What type of reporting will you need from the system?
• How many users will you have? (Desktop and mobile)
